About New Jersey programs
In New Jersey each county runs its own household hazardous waste program, usually through a county utilities authority or improvement authority. Most counties hold free collection days a few times a year, often at several locations, while Burlington and Monmouth counties run permanent drop-off facilities and Morris County runs one by appointment. We check each county program’s own page and current flyer.
Each county runs its own program; event locations change from date to date, so check the listing for the next date and place.
State rules and programs
- Agency: the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) regulates hazardous waste. Counties, county utilities authorities and improvement authorities run the household hazardous waste programs and set their own dates, hours and rules.
- Collection days: most counties hold household hazardous waste days a few times a year, often rotating among several locations. Most need no registration; Ocean County requires online registration.
- Residents only: nearly every New Jersey program takes waste only from residents of its own county and asks for proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or tax bill. Businesses and commercial vehicles are turned away.
- Latex paint: most New Jersey programs do not take latex (water-based) paint. Let it dry out, for example with cat litter, and put the can in the trash. Oil-based paint goes to a household hazardous waste site or event.
- Paint: New Jersey has no PaintCare paint stewardship program. See the paint guide.
- Between events: Burlington County’s facility takes out-of-county residents by appointment for a fee, and the Morris County MUA facility takes Somerset County residents for a fee.
FAQ
Is household hazardous waste disposal free in New Jersey?
For residents it usually is. County programs are free for their own residents, though a few charge for amounts over a set limit. Check the fees on each listing.
Can I use another county’s collection day in New Jersey?
Usually not. New Jersey programs take waste only from their own county’s residents. Burlington County’s permanent facility accepts out-of-county residents by appointment for a fee.
What if my county has no event coming up?
Many New Jersey counties hold their last collection day in the fall and post the next year’s dates over the winter. Check your county page for the contact number, or ask about a permanent facility that accepts out-of-county residents.
