About New York programs
Most New York counties handle household hazardous waste with one-day collection events, usually by appointment, while a smaller number run permanent drop-off sites. New York City residents use the Department of Sanitation’s drop-off sites and SAFE Disposal Events. We start from the NYSDEC list of permitted household hazardous waste facilities, then check each program’s own page.
Counted by every county a program serves, so a regional program can appear under more than one county.
State rules and programs
- Agency: the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) permits household hazardous waste collection facilities and events. Counties, cities, towns and regional solid waste authorities run the programs and set their own hours and rules.
- Collection events: many counties hold only one or two household hazardous waste days a year, most often between spring and fall. Many need advance registration, and some fill up early.
- Residents only: almost every New York program is limited to residents of the county, town or district that runs it, and many ask for an ID or utility bill.
- New York City: the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) runs a Special Waste Drop-Off site in each borough and holds SAFE Disposal Events for items those sites don’t take.
- Paint: New York has a PaintCare program, so many paint and hardware stores take leftover paint for free. See the paint guide.
FAQ
Is household hazardous waste disposal free in New York?
For residents it usually is. Most county and town programs are free for their own residents, though a few charge a small registration or vehicle fee. Check the fees on each listing.
Can I use another county’s collection event in New York?
Usually not. Most New York programs take waste only from their own residents. A few regional programs serve more than one county, and those listings say so.
What if my county has no event coming up?
Many New York counties hold only one or two events a year. Check your county page for the last dates and contact number, and ask whether a neighboring program accepts your county’s residents.
