About Pennsylvania programs
In Pennsylvania, household hazardous waste programs are run by counties, solid waste authorities, municipalities and private operators, so what is available differs a lot from county to county. A few places run permanent drop-off sites, many counties hold one or two collection days a year, and some have no program at all. We check each program’s own page and flyer against the Pennsylvania DEP list.
Programs, fees and dates differ from county to county; counties without a current listing show a phone number to call.
State rules and programs
- Agency: the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) keeps a statewide list of household hazardous waste programs and events. Counties, solid waste authorities, municipalities, environmental groups and waste haulers run the programs and set their own dates, hours, fees and rules.
- Residents only: most Pennsylvania programs take household hazardous waste only from residents of the county or municipality that runs them. In the Philadelphia area, residents of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties can use any of the region’s collection events.
- Register first: many Pennsylvania collection days, including the drive-through events run with Noble Environmental in western Pennsylvania, require you to register or book a time before you go.
- Fees: many Pennsylvania programs charge by the pound or a flat fee per household, while others are free for residents. Check the fees on each listing before you go.
- Paint: Pennsylvania has no PaintCare paint stewardship program. See the paint guide.
- Curbside pickup: some Pennsylvania municipalities and waste haulers collect household hazardous waste at the curb. The DEP keeps a separate list of these curbside programs.
FAQ
Is household hazardous waste disposal free in Pennsylvania?
It depends on the program. Some county and city collection days are free for residents, while many Pennsylvania programs charge by the pound or a flat fee per household. Check the fees on each listing.
Can I use another county’s collection day in Pennsylvania?
Usually not. Most Pennsylvania programs take waste only from their own residents. The Southeastern Pennsylvania events are an exception: residents of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties can use any of them.
What if my county has no household hazardous waste program?
Many Pennsylvania counties hold collection days only once or twice a year, and some hold none. Call the number on your county page to ask about the next collection day or a program nearby that accepts out-of-county residents.
